The US central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions created to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
