EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
